Life is Fragile
The Bujinkan and the world has lost a good man.
Greg Dilley of Salinas CA past this week.
Soke received word last night at training and said to me “human life is fragile”
Greg had a heart of gold and was a dedicated Budoka.
He will be greatly missed.
Addition: On Sunday at Hombu, Soke held a moment of silence for Greg. He was promoted to Judan and awarded the Bujinkan Gold medal.

I had known Greg since about 2006 when I first contacted him regarding some business and finally met him during this past Daikomyosai, where we chatted briefly before the start of the first day.
I was left with a great impression of an even greater guy who had helped me out numerous times even though I live on the East coast and he was in no way obligated to assist me. He was a very warm, generous, caring guy and I was absolutely stunned to hear of his passing.
Even now, as I type this at my computer, I’m in an enormous state of disbelief and just really can’t believe he’s gone.
My heart goes out to his family, students and friends and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt he’s in a much better place.
Greg was one of the good guys, an all the way nice guy.
Deepest condolences to his family.
Doug, thank you for posting this. Greg was a beautiful person, dedicated to his training, his beliefs, and his family. He was a warm hearted person, generous with his time and his knowledge. He was kind to people he barely knew, and a treasure to those who knew him well. He was also one of my closest friends in the world. He will be dearly missed.
Today at hombu, before class started, Soke had everyone observe a minutes silence in memory of Greg.
Yes, he will be missed.
Rest in peace Greg…
He will be missed, R.I.P.
Hi Doug,
Thank you for sharing these great insights into our friend and fellow warrior knight,Greg Dilley.Greg was the kind of guy that would totally immerse himself into whatever it was he was involved in,whether it be our Budo or diving. The Bujinkan is much like a roaring fire storm and whenever one of our own passes away, the fire is not as warm nor as bright.
No words can express our loss, however Greg passed away doing something he truly loved. We’ll miss you old friend.Take care!
Sincerely,
David C. Furkawa
Thank you for the post Doug.
Anyone who knew Greg can tell you that he was a kind, exceptional person. His passing is a tremendous blow, we’re all better for having known him.
Greg had a true warriors heart, full of love for life, a passion for budo, and the kindness to always do the right thing. Being one of his students and friends has been a great honor for me.
Greg had a generous heart, and two amazing powers – to perceive what people needed and to act on that perception. He was a wonderful sempai and friend. My thoughts are with his friends and family now.
On my first, and so far only, trip to japan during 2006 Daikomyosai, i was nervous about meeting new Buyu. Greg was more than willing to share his knowledge and have me train with him and his group during classes and he helped make me feel at home even though I was far away. A great guy who was not only willing to help, but wanted to.
My deepest respects and condolences for his family during this difficult time.
my deepest sympathy to his family and friend he will be missed
may he rest in peace

After hearing of this tragedy, our dojo held a moment of silence in honor of this man. Alot of painful energies had been felt that week here on the mountain, and to lose a shihan of such character and purity would certainly explain it. Our thoughts are with you always.

Dear Buyu,
Hi everyone.Jim Kruse and I attended Greg’s memorial service in Santa Clara last month. He was a regular guy with an extraordinary gift for being at the right place,at the right time to give a hand to anyone in need.Greg was remembered by his younger brother Chris,as a guy who had such a wonderful sense of humor, playing jokes, but also as a man who pursued his interests such as Budo, music and his love of the ocean with a compelling passion.
Jack Hoban mentioned Greg a number of times this past weekend at our Buyu Camp (W) at the Marin Headlands. He will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him.At Camp this year, the Jolly Roger was flown on the main flag pole.We expected Greg to emerge out of the blue and make a dramatic entrance. He was cetainly there in spirit.Take care!
Sincerely,
David C. Furukawa
