“Kataless in Seattle”

The seminar in Seattle WA last weekend was an excellent success and a very good example of Budo community. Several Shidoshi and Shihan visited to train and share their input with the seminar participants.  I want to thank David and his group for their wonderful hospitality last weekend as well as the many people who made the long trip to participate.

I was not able to be there for the 2nd day entirely, so thankfully it was taken by a local Shidoshi, Aric Keith who shares my passion for realism in the training.  If I could have stayed, I would have preferred to train, rather than teach!

I believe that everyone had a good grasp of the formless form and this is due to their capable teachers and sound foundation of basics.

Looking forward to getting back to Seattle soon.

I was wondering if someone could elaborate on your notion or “realism in training”. Although I enjoy my Bujinkan training, I often feel a lack of realism in my uke. Their attacks are often static, a simple attack followed by nothing more than them waiting for me to apply my technique. Although I know a real battle is impossible to simulate, I still feel that my uke’s lack of “aliveness” affects our training in a negative way. I am reluctant to ask my sensei, because he is shinobi and I do not want him to feel challenged. Any advice?
